Camp Girard 2006 Begins Monday Morning
A Movement of the Mind, Body and Soul
The Girard JOURNAL Staff
A record number of campers and staff will get off to a great summer at Camp Girard 2006 on Monday morning. Families will begin dropping off campers in front of Founder's hall on Monday morning at 8 AM. "We're ready" says an eager and excited Shira Woolf-Cohen, camp director for the past five years.
According to Ms. Woolf-Cohen, a record number of campers registerd for the exciting summer camp experience at Girard College. "It is an academic camp" says Woolf-Cohen, but the kids don't see it as an extension of school. Not all the participants come from Girard College; many are from the general community outside the wall, and some are from the People for People Charter School on Broad Street, some are family of Girard students and alumni.
As with any summer camp it's chock full of activities like sports, games, swimming and field trips. But, there are math, science, reading clubs and electives that enhance and enrich the learning experience too.
When the remaining camp staff are hired and placed, Camp Girard 2006 could top out at about 450 participants, including staff, supllemental staff and campers. It's a record!
