Danny lives in South Philadelphia with his brother, age 9, and his mother. Danny wants to see his brother also attend Girard College. "He's scared to leave home" Danny says. His family was planning a trip to his homeland of Vietnam this summer, but now Dan says "We may just go to Detroit" [where he has other family members].

Danny says that Social studies is his favorite class, because history is interesting to him. The last program day is on Thursday, May 25th. Staff are also reminded that there is no program this Thursday, May 11th. Students in all grades wil present their "Spring Concert" at 7 PM in the High School auditorium. See www.girardcollege.com for further details.

G-SAP began this school year, after many delays on January 26th. Students were offered many extra curricular activities and tutoring in both Language Arts and Math. There were PSSA Prep classes, SAT Prep classes and Study Skills along with a menu of elective enrichments from sewing to journalism and African Dance and Drumming.

For the school year beginning in September of 2006, a full year program is planned. Only one G-SAP session was held this year. Community activism, and academically supportive programs were offered to middle-school and high school students at least two days weekly. Service learning was a key to the offerings. Student voice--and choice was important to the program planners, as it will be next school year as well.

The Girard JOURNAL will make every effort to keep staff, faculty and students up-to-date as the program gears up next academic year; meanwhile, thanks to all the facilitators, tutors and administrative staff of G-SAP for a job well done.

Camp Girard staff are to report to the library next Wednesday, May 17th at 6 PM for a training and orientation meeting with camp director Shira Woolf-Cohen and administrative staff. New staff may stop by HR-Human resources in the basement of the High School building for paperwork processing from 330 PM until 5 PM.

Learn more about Camp Girard by stopping by the office (#3-Merchant Hall) any Monday through Thursday afternoon from 330 PM until 5:00 PM--but, not after May 23rd.
